Am Samstag, den 15. Juni 2024, besuchten Darren und sein Freund Brian den SV Fortuna Bottrop 1932 e.V. 

Die beiden Engländer stammen aus der Bottroper Partnerstadt Blackpool. Bereits mehrere Monate zuvor nahmen die Engländer Kontakt zum Verein an der Rheinbabenstraße auf.

Blackpool, die Heimatstadt des Blackpool FC, ist eine Küstenstadt in der Grafschaft Lancashire im Nordwesten Englands. Bekannt ist die Stadt vor allem für ihren berühmten Pier, die lebhafte Strandpromenade und den ikonischen Blackpool Tower. Seit 1980 verbindet Bottrop und Blackpool eine Städtepartnerschaft, die den kulturellen Austausch und die Freundschaft zwischen den beiden Städten fördert.

"Die EURO 2024 in den Stadien unserer Nachbarschaft ist ja schon ein echtes Highlight. Dass wir dann das Interesse von Personen aus unserer Partnerstadt Blackpool wecken, ist natürlich wahnsinnig schön", so Henning Ritter, 2. Vorsitzender des Vereins.

Die beiden Engländer planten ihren Trip nach Deutschland schon vor ein paar Monaten, um die englischen Vorrundenspiele zu sehen. Das erste Spiel findet in Gelsenkirchen statt: "Da das erste Spiel in Gelsenkirchen stattfindet, haben wir uns auch mit unserer Partnerstadt Bottrop beschäftigt. Als glühende Fußballfans sind wir dann auf Fortuna Bottrop gestoßen", erklärte Darren.

Neben dem Sightseeing begrüßte der Vorstand die Engländer auf Rheinbaben und ging kurzweilig auf die Geschichte des Vereins und der Sportanlage Rheinbaben sowie die Bergbauvergangenheit der Region ein.

Nach der Gruppenphase geht es für die beiden und ihre Freunde wieder zurück in die Heimat. Sollte England die Gruppenphase überstehen, werden die beiden noch einmal nach Deutschland kommen und dann auch wieder nach Rheinbaben finden. Denn wird England Gruppensieger oder Gruppenzweiter, wird das Achtelfinalspiel in Gelsenkirchen oder Dortmund ausgetragen.

Fortuna Bottrop receives visitors from Bottrop's twin town, Blackpool.

On Saturday, June 15, 2024, Darren and his friend Brian visited SV Fortuna Bottrop 1932 e.V. The two Englishmen hail from Bottrop's twin town, Blackpool. Several months prior, they had contacted the club on Rheinbabenstraße.

Blackpool, home of Blackpool FC, is a coastal town in the county of Lancashire in northwest England. The town is known for its famous pier, lively promenade, and the iconic Blackpool Tower. Since 1980, Bottrop and Blackpool have been twinned, fostering cultural exchange and friendship between the two cities. "The EURO 2024 in the stadiums of our neighborhood is already a real highlight. That we then attract the interest of people from our twin town Blackpool is, of course, incredibly nice," said Henning Ritter, the club's vice-chairman.

The two Englishmen planned their trip to Germany a few months ago to watch the English group stage matches. The first match takes place in Gelsenkirchen: "Since the first match is in Gelsenkirchen, we also looked into our twin town Bottrop. As avid football fans, we then came across Fortuna Bottrop," explained Darren.

In addition to sightseeing, the board welcomed the Englishmen to Rheinbaben and briefly discussed the history of the club, the Rheinbaben sports facility, and the mining history of the region. After the group stage, the two and their friends will return home. Should England advance past the group stage, they will come back to Germany and visit Rheinbaben again. If England finishes first or second in their group, the round of 16 match will be held in Gelsenkirchen or Dortmund.
